FTP with Eclipse
This is how I setup to edit files on my website from eclipse:
Intall Aptana studio plugin. It is available at http://www.aptana.com. The site has instructions on how to install the plugin. At the time this article is written, the studio is at version 3 and the plugin is at http://download.aptana.com/studio3/plugin/install
On Window button, select "Web" perspective, which may be hidden within 'Other...'
Click Window button, select view 'Remote' which may be hidden within 'Other...' Hopefully, this opens a Remote tab on the left panel. On the Remote tab, click on the globe with a + sign to bring up an ftp coonection setup panel. Fill out the form and select OK.
The Remote panel should show the connection just created.
The tool is handly for editing remote files. It is, however, slow relative to tools made specifically for ftping files and directories such as Filezilla.
Opening file for read failed Connection reset. I had this error while reading remotefiles after updating java to jre7. To work around the problem without deleting jre7, I specified jre6 in the eclipse.ini file. On windows machine, this file is in the same directory as the eclipse executable file. This is the content of my eclipse.ini.
-startup plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.3.0.v20120522-1813.jar --launcher.library plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.win32.win32.x86_64_1.1.200.v20120913-144807 -showsplash org.eclipse.platform --launcher.XXMaxPermSize 512m -vm C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\javaw.exe --launcher.defaultAction openFile -vmargs -Xms40m -Xmx1024m
The important lines are the -vm and c:\Program Files\... Your machine may have different plugins and its javaw may be somewhere else.
To set utf-8, right click on your project on the left panel (not the projects button), select properties, expand More Options then pick encoding UTF-8.
It is also an excellent idea to set a) Preferences > General > Content Types > default encoding for TEXT as UTF-8, b) Preferences > General > Workspaces, "Text file encoding" to "UTF-8" and c) General > Editors > Text Editors > Spelling > Encoding to UTF-8.
